Another Filipino made it on the top A day after three Filipino women reached the “rooftop of the world,” fellow mountaineer also reached the summit of Mt. Everest in what his wife, Melissa, described on Saturday as a “quiet, no-hype” climb on the world’s highest mountain.

The feat of Pablo was posted on websites Everestnews.com and Astrek.com, the official website of the Asian Trekking International Expedition which organized Pablo’s ascent on Mt. Everest along with 11 other climbers from the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Japan and Czechoslovakia.

Pablo, who had Ang Temba Sherpa with him, was the lone Filipino member of the expedition.

On Wednesday, May 16, three Filipino women mountaineers, Noelle Wenceslao, and , reached the peak of Mt Everest by climbing up the North Side from Tibet and climbed down the South Side into Nepal, the first women ever to traverse the world’s tallest peak.

Pablo, an employee of Globe Telecoms, climbed Mt Everest from the North Side and climbed down via the North Side, according to his wife. “He did not traverse,” Melissa said.

Pablo reached the summit on May 17, exactly one year since Heracleo “Leo” Oracion became the first Filipino to reach the Everest peak, said to be the dream of every mountain climber.

The websites Everestnews.com and Astrek.com identified the other members and their country as follows: Marjolein De Bruycker (Belgium), Brian Wilfred Oestrike (US), Justin Joel Hewitt (US), Shane David Edmonds (US), Frederick Levi Borst (US), Kazufumi Watandbe (Japan), Yasuhiko Mochizuki (Japan), Michael Niemeier (Denmark), Libor Kozak (Czechoslovakia), Paulo R. P. Coelho (Brazil) and Helena G.P. Pinto Coelho (Brazil).

Last year, Pablo was among the leaders of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition (FPMEE) that launched the ambitious climb to plant the Philippine flag on the world’s highest peak.

On May 17, 2006, Leo Oracion reached the peak of and became the first Filipino to set foot on the world’s highest peak. Erwin “Pastor” Emata would follow him on May 18, and Romeo Garduce made it an hour after.

But the FPMEE split into factions over disagreements on management style and financial problems, with some climbers, like Wenceslao, Belarmino and Dayondon siding with expedition leader Art Valdez, and another group, among them Pablo, siding with Butch Sebastian, who was Valdez’ co-expedition leader.

The FPMEE had initially planned a “unity climb” which would see the women climbers scaling the North and South sides simultaneously, and uniting at the summit. But the group split even before the “unity climb” could be finalized early this year
