PRESS RELEASE

BABAE KA CALLS ON COMELEC TO DEFER PROCLAMATION OF AKBAYAN, GABRIELA AND ANAKPAWIS

MANILA. – WOMEN’S partylist group Babae para sa Kaunlaran (BABAE KA) has called on the Commission on Election (COMELEC) to defer the proclamation of Akbayan, Gabriela and Anakpawis until after the resolution of the investigations which could result to the disqualification of the said groups.

“We have filed a disqualification case against Akbayan for receiving foreign funds while a motu propio investigation of Gabriela and Anakpawis has been requested for violation of certain provisions of the partylist law. These are serious matters that should be addressed immediately by the COMELEC,” said Ruth Vasquez, president of BABAE KA.

The group alleged that Akbayan has received funding from the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a foundation of German leftwing social democrats with an office in the country. It also alleged that Gabriela and Anakpawis are members of partylist Bayan Muna coalition and thus must be disqualified for violating the maximum 3 seats rule of the partylist system.

Under the law, a partylist organization may be disqualified if proven that it received funding from foreign governments or foundations. Also, a partylist that gather 6% or more of the total number of votes cast on the partylist system shall have the maximum 3 seats in congress.

“The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is the benefactor of Akbayan and its allied organizations including the Akbayan Youth. Akbayan has directly and indirectly benefited from the funding and logistical support of this German foundation. It has directly and indirectly aided the electoral activities of Akbayan,” Vasquez stressed.

She added that, “Gabriela and Anakpawis are members of the Bayan Muna and Bayan coalition. In fact, the representatives of these groups – Liza Maza of Gabriela and Crispin Beltran of Anakpawis – were the number 2 and 3 nominee-representatives of Bayan Muna in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004. The registrations of both organizations circumvented the law and violated the maximum 3 seats rule.”

Yes I think thatis a proven accusation. For how can people spend lots of money for their daily activities. Where to get to feed those demonstrators who are damaging
foreign investors interests or driving them away and invest in other
peaceful countries.

Saan kaya galing?
Yun namang si Liza Maza at Beltran, di ba mga Bayan Muna kayo? Eh bakit may bago kayong organisasyon?

If such funding (election) were given as a grant, so to say from a foreign benefactor, I see it as a very positive move. A foreign grantor is very confident enough that those groups mentioned are doing very well in the political arena by exposing and proposing changes. Maybe, the grantor have seen their consistency and without resevations extended such noble action. What we need rightnow are numbers of truthful people-based and oriented organizations or groups to help govern or even rule the nation that are not “Politiko and Trapos”. Why question their representation if they have indeed made gradual reforms and religiously met the demands of the people. Are they involved in corruption so to keep them updated in every election? Did the funds were taken from the cavan of the gov’t just like the Fertilizer Fund scandal? We need them and any other groups to advance the concerns of the people.
