Fire in Port Area, Manila

The fire in Baseco Compound at Port Area, Manila started at around 9 pm Saturday night. Since most of the houses in this area are made of wood, the fire quickly spread through the place destroying around 500 houses and over 1000 families lost their homes.  The fire was put out at 11:00 pm by the firefighters. The 2 injured people were immediately taken to the hospital.

"Natutulog na kami, nakita ko lumiliwanag kaya kinalampag ko mga kapitbahay namin kasi walang sumisigaw," a fire victim, hrouGrace Ferrer, recalled in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

The Bureau of Fire Protection  are yet to know if the fire began at the house of certain Erick Lakay.

Usually ang cause ng sunog walang kuryente tapos gumagamit ng gasera, kandila tapos nababangga ng pusa o aso," noted BFP-National Capital Region chief Senior Superintendent Pablito Cordeta.

Vice Mayor Isko Moreno said that there are shelter areas that can be made available.
