Mayon Volcano, Still A Threat

Although it has been reported that the Mayon Volcano showed less visible signs of unrest, this could just be a deceptive calmness that may eventually lead to a deadly eruption. This was according to the Chief government Volcanologist.
“Do not become complacent. The people only see what is coming out of the crater and that is often cloud covered. It is not just the observed phenomenon that matters. We also look at the quakes, the gas emitted and the swelling of the volcano,” said chief volcanologist Renato Solidum.
The people should not just look at the number of quakes. This is still a warning to the people who are living near the Mayon Volcano and has not evacuated yet.
“You might think it is taking a break but the volcano is still swelling,” he said after the restive volcano emitted fewer ash emissions on Sunday than in previous days.
According to him, while the amount of lava trickling out of the volcano had fallen, the magma inside Mayon was still rising, possibly indicating that the volcano was clogged.
The Mayon Volcano increased its activity earlier this month which made the government to announce a level four alert. This means that the explosive may happen any day. The Mayon Volcano could stay active for as long as two months. The Mayon Volcano erupted 48 times in recorded history.
